Kon-Tiki explorer Thor Heyerdahl dies at 87
|
NORWEGIAN explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who crossed the Pacific on a
balsa raft and the Atlantic in a reed vessel, died yesterday of
cancer.
Heyerdahl, who was 87, won worldwide acclaim with his 1947 voyage
across the Pacific on a replica of an aboriginal balsa raft called
Kon-Tiki. He died in a family home at Colla Micheri in northern
Italy.
"He died ... with his family by his side, quietly and peacefully.
He did not wake during the past three days," his eldest son, Thor
Heyerdahl Jnr, said.
The explorer had been suffering from a cancer that had spread to
his brain despite surgery last year, ...
