New fields at six-year high in North Sea

APPROVALS of new fields in the UK sector of the North Sea hit a six-year high last year, according to an optimistic economic review of the offshore oil and gas sector released yesterday.

A total of 21 new fields, costing GBP 2.5 billion in total to develop, were approved by the Department of Primary Industry during the year, according to the influential UK Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA).

The UKOOA report also said capital investment in 2001 was up 25 per cent to GBP 3.5 billion.
