Delighted Hermitage unveils little black number
|
A FAMOUS painting of a plain black square went on display
yesterday at the Hermitage museum in what officials described as a
sign that Russia was again safeguarding its heritage.
Black Square, by the avant-garde artist Kazemir Malevich, was
secured by the Hermitage after a Russian businessman, gave the
culture ministry $1 million (GBP 670,000) to buy it.
"Since the 1930s, the museum's treasures were only going away,"
said Mikhail Piotrovsky, director of the Hermitage. "Black Square is
the first masterpiece of such a high scale that has arrived at the
Hermitage since that time."
