Bluebells' growing problem

English bluebells traditionally carpet shady woodland in blue, heralding the start of warmer weather. But their arrival this year has caused consternation among wild flower conservationists.

The delicate wild flower, which blooms from April until the end of June, is no longer merely at risk from tramplers or illegal wholesalers who excavate the bulbs from deciduous woodland. The species is now facing a more imminent threat: invasion from its own European counterpart, the Spanish bluebell.
