Professor William Hepburn Russell Lumsden, virologist and
protozoologist, Emeritus Professor of Medical Protozoology,
University of London
Born: 27 March, 1914, in Forfar Died: 13 May, 2002, in Edinburgh,
aged 88
RUSSELL Lumsden was born in Forfar, but in 1919 the family moved
to Darlington, from where his father functioned as schools medical
officer for Durham County.
He was educated at the excellent Queen Elizabeth Grammar School
until 1931, when he obtained a Carnegie Scholarship to read Zoology
under Sir John Graham Kerr at the University of Glasgow. Although
