BANK holidays were invented by Sir John Lubbock, MP, in 1871. Before then, over-worked Victorian bank workers only got holidays on Good Friday, May Day, 1 November and Christmas Day. Understandably, counter service could be a bit ragged, not to say grumpy. So Sir John persuaded Parliament to add a few more official holidays for the financial services industry. In time, these holidays came to be appropriated by non-bank workers as well, but by then the term bank holiday had stuck.
