Helicopter pilot killed in crash off Orkney
|
THE pilot of a chartered helicopter was killed yesterday when the
aircraft crashed into the sea off Orkney while carrying out
maintenance work on behalf of the lighthouse service.
The Bolkow 105 helicopter had been flying with an underslung load
in 20-knot winds when, without warning, the aircraft plunged into the
sea off the Brough of Birsay in the north-west of the island.
Eyewitnesses later described how the helicopter plummeted from the
sky after the load which the aircraft was carrying suddenly burst
open and pieces of metal struck the rotor blades. There were also
