GORDON Brown sought to claim Adam Smith, the 18th century author of the Wealth of Nations, from his more right-wing admirers last night stating that the economist was just as concerned with social improvement as he was with enterprise.

The Chancellor, who was introducing a debate on Smith's ideas at the University of Edinburgh, referred to the fact that both he and the economist were born in Kirkaldy, Fife.

And he revealed that he had been reading the Wealth of Nations in preparation for the debate while putting together last week's Budget. But he joked that while he had been drawn to a ...
