Bloody battle to leave al-Qaeda no escape

ANALYSIS
YESTERDAY'S bloody engagement in southern Afghanistan was the
culmination of several weeks of planning by United States special
forces commanders to bottle up and then kill or capture a large group
of al-Qaeda and Taleban fighters.
From the fragmentary information emerging it is clear that US
observation teams and air reconnaissance had been "staking out" the
Gardez regions, while a large force of pro-western Afghan tribesmen
was mustered, backed by US and allied soldiers, for Operation
Anaconda. Preparations reached a high point two weeks ago when
