Appeals court frees woman sentenced to stoning

EVEN as one Nigerian Islamic court buckled to government pressure
yesterday and freed a woman sentenced to be stoned to death, it
emerged that another convicted adulteress was facing the same fate.
A sharia court of appeal in the northern state of Sokoto yesterday
overruled the death sentence imposed on Safiya Huseini, 35, on
procedural grounds. But later it emerged that Amina Lawal Kurami, a
divorced woman from the remote village of Bakori in the Katsina state
