Music of the isles goes under the hammer

THE famous motif, ebbing and flowing like a wave, sounds plaintively on bassoon, but becomes a tempestuous crescendo - music that made an obscure and inhospitable islet off Mull famous throughout the world.

Now the score of Felix Mendelssohn's ever-popular The Hebrides overture, inspired partly by the composer's visit to the isle of Staffa in 1829, is expected to go for rather more than a song - in fact, somewhere between GBP 500,000 and GBP 700,000 - when it comes up for auction at Sotheby's, in London, in May.
