Historic treasure islands: Orkney

Year after year, for nearly two decades, I have promised myself a visit to the St Magnus Festival Kirkwall's annual shindig. I imagine music unbounded, ozone on tap, surfing the wave of oratorio and fugue.

The thought has sustained me through bleak midwinters, picturing four or five balmy nights at the end of June the Orkney islands in musical resonance, the main town of Kirkwall lit by the glimmering ghost of the midnight sun, stars like notes between staves of cloud. It remains my dream.

I'm still waiting, because on my latest foray to these islands off the top of Scotland, I missed the ...
