Italian royals pledge loyalty as senate votes on their return

BARRED from setting foot in their country for 56 years, male members of Italy's royal family yesterday pledged loyalty to the constitution as a gesture to MPs preparing to vote on whether to allow their return.

The senate, the upper chamber of parliament, is to hold its first vote tomorrow on a constitutional amendment to lift the 1946 ban forbidding male heirs of the House of Savoy from living in or visiting Italy.
