When Sharon and Yola Jacobsen sing at a concert in Edinburgh this
weekend, they will be doing more than just performing. It will be a
celebration of diversity and defiance - and of their own remarkable
grandfather.
In 1935 Joseph "Jola" Jacobsen, then a well-known musician,
teacher and Orthodox Jew, published a songbook in his native city of
Hamburg. A few years later, he fled the Nazis with his wife and four
children and settled in England, where he died, aged only 45, in
