New maternity unit may drop name of Simpson
|
THE name of Sir James Young Simpson, the man who pioneered the use
of anaesthetic in childbirth, could be removed from Edinburgh Royal
Infirmary's maternity unit after more than a century, it emerged
yesterday.
Health chiefs are considering changing the name of the Simpson's
Memorial Maternity Pavilion when the hospital moves to Little France
later this year. One name being considered is the Reproductive
Sciences Ward.
Hospital officials stressed yesterday that no final decision had
been made, but historians branded the proposal an "insult" to the
