WWII Sub's New Mission: Artificial Reef
|
A World War II-era submarine used in battles in the Java and
South China seas will be sunk about 15 miles offshore here and turned
into an artificial reef after it is towed from Portsmouth, Va.
"There's no doubt in my mind that this will provide a haven for
little fish, which will attract big fish, which will attract
fishermen and divers, which will mean business for Ocean City," said
Ocean City council president George Hurley.
Ownership of the 312-foot USS 324, which was built in 1944, has
been transferred to the city after overcoming a series of
bureaucratic obstacles.
