Even though his father and grandfather were ministers in the Church of God in Christ, Neavelle A. Coles had no plans to follow in their footsteps.

"I vowed that I would never preach. I wanted to become an accountant," said Coles, who received an accounting degree from what is now part of George Washington University and worked as an accountant for the Treasury Department for nearly two decades.

But last Sunday, there was Coles, seated in the pulpit of New Bethel Church of God in Christ in Northwest Washington, not only as pastor, but also as the newly installed bishop for the 40 area ...
