Max Robinson: The Talent and the Torment; Memories of the Rise and Fall

It is almost impossible to talk about the Max Robinson I remember without talking about the demons that both drove him to and toppled him from the pinnacle of success in television news.

But I find it easier to understand this complicated man, who died yesterday at age 49, by thinking about the two men he particularly admired: Walter Cronkite, the quintessential TV anchor, and Mal Goode, the black pioneer of network news, whom Robinson, in his last months, came to resemble.
