WHEN the shortlist for the inaugural Man Booker International
Prize was announced in 2005, it was like a breath of fresh air into
the usually musty echelons of "lifetime achievement" awards.
Its brief was to recognise "one writer's continued creativity,
development and overall contribution to fiction on the world stage" -
a Nobel for Novels, if you like. The 2005 shortlist responded to this
brief imaginatively: 10 of the 18 authors did not have English as
their first language, and it included such luminaries as Gnter Grass,
Naguib Mahfouz and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
