WHAT are museums for? Time was when no one was in any doubt. The
Victorian idea of a museum as a collection of objects designed to
educate and inspire, with a strong emphasis on self-improvement, has
been modified down the years, tailored to the demands of modern
audiences, who are interested in exhibits that grab their attention,
tell a story, and offer an interpretation that they can relate to
their own lives.
Nowhere has this aim been more eagerly grasped than at the newly
refurbished Kelvingrove Museum and Gallery, which re-opened last year
