WHAT are museums for? Time was when no one was in any doubt. The Victorian idea of a museum as a collection of objects designed to educate and inspire, with a strong emphasis on self-improvement, has been modified down the years, tailored to the demands of modern audiences, who are interested in exhibits that grab their attention, tell a story, and offer an interpretation that they can relate to their own lives.
