IT MIGHT be a fine idea if every aspiring writer were given a copy
of this biography; for the life of Robert Southey is almost a parable
of the vicissitudes of authorial fame and posthumous reputation.
Despite an erratic education - he was expelled from Westminster for
writing a satire on flogging, and, when not taking extended walking
trips, dithered between medicine, law and the church at Oxford -
Southey gained the highest literary office in the land, the Poet
