Linklater's Scotland: An ambitious project aims to trumpet the relationship between Scotland and Norway through poetry and music

I HAVE a soft spot for Magnus the Law-mender. King of Norway in 1266, he negotiated the far-sighted Treaty of Perth, which brought an end to the Viking wars and ceded the Western Isles to Scotland. The price was pretty reasonable - 4,000 merks, or just over GBP 2,500 sterling, with an annual rental of GBP 50, which must have seemed a bargain at the time. If Magnus's plans had worked out, Scotland would have become a Norse nation, and we would all have been the better for it.
