PERHAPS we should forget the Alamo. The heroic tale of brave Texans who lost their lives defending a dusty fort against a huge Mexican army in the name of independence may not be all it seems.

The deaths of Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and 187 other noble souls in the Mexican desert in 1836 has stirred the imagination ever since and become an iconic episode in American history.

But a controversial new book by a Scottish academic on the legendary siege - the subject of a new Hollywood blockbuster released in the UK this weekend - sets out to explode the Alamo myth.
