IT WAS one of those moments when you realise nothing will ever be
the same again: the moment Ellsworth Kelly changed the way I see. It
happened 11 years ago in the Tate Gallery. We were walking together
through an exhibition of 40 years of his work and slowly,
tentatively, I was firing off fairly basic questions, attempting to
unravel the essential truth of the man behind some of the most
breathtaking works of art I had ever seen. Finally, after half an
hour of gentle probing, Kelly looked up at the light fittings - white
boxes in the ceiling.
