IT IS a wonderful irony that in the same month that the National
Gallery of Scotland hosts its annual show of the peerless Vaughan
bequest of Turner watercolours, it also unveils an important new
acquisition of some 30 works by Edward Lear.
Lear worshipped Turner, calling him the greatest ever landscape
artist. But the master's brilliance merely emphasised Lear's own
shortcomings and drove him into depression. Writing in his diary
after a visit to the National Gallery in 1880 he could manage simply
a hopeless: "O Turner".
