WALKING into the Vuillard exhibition is a Proustian experience. Beneath crepuscular lighting, walls the colour of cafe au lait conspire with the work to transport you to the France of popular imagination. That slightly shabby, petit-bourgeois northern France of cafes, lace tablecloths, Gauloises, sensible frocks and brown wallpaper. This is Vuillard's universe, and like Proust's it is a curiously comforting place. But that is the secret of Vuillard's genius (and this show is evidence that he possessed nothing less).
