Labour backbenchers plot revenge on BBC

THE BBC will be stripped of its GBP 2.5bn television licence fund under a plan by a senior Labour MP to 'take revenge' on the corporation over its Gulf War coverage and the death of Dr David Kelly.

In an article for Scotland on Sunday, Gerald Kaufman, who chairs the powerful Commons Culture, Media and Sport committee, claims the BBC has "deplorably" failed in its duty to impartiality and has endangered its own future.

It is understood that there is also some support among ministers for a shake-up in the corporation's finances and accountability structure.
