Asked to overturn the conviction of eight Christian activists for helping to smuggle or harbor illegal immigrants, federal appeals court judges today questioned the activists' failure to seek legal status for the refugees.

Judge Cynthia Holcomb Hall noted that the activists, part of the sanctuary movement, felt the aliens were entitled to enter the United States under the 1980 Refugee Act. "But aren't they as aliens required to present themselves to the Immigration Service under the act?" Hall asked.
