Scientists link brain damage to anaesthetic

CHILDREN under the age of three who are given general anaesthetic could suffer brain damage, tests carried out on rats suggest.

Scientists in the US have discovered that drugs regularly used to anaesthetise children during surgery cause irreparable brain damage to rats.

Based on the alarming findings, the scientist in charge of the research is advising parents to postpone operations which are not for potentially fatal conditions until children are at least three years old.
