A CARD comes from France, from friends living near Briancon on the
edge of the Ecrins national park, high up by the Italian border. They
are redoubtable intellectuals in the best French tradition. Andree
once held not one but three chairs at Strasbourg University, in
psychology and the social sciences, while her husband Rene, a
professor of urban planning, in his retirement went to Sarajevo (when
it was still under fire) to help draw up schemes for reconstruction,
and gives his services freely to the shanty towns of Mexico City.
