IT IS the national sweetie of Scotland, and an essential element of bring-and-buy sales and charity coffee mornings for generations.

But tablet, one of the nation's favourite sweet-toothed treats, is threatened by extinction.

Nestle, the world's biggest manufacturer of condensed milk, has announced it is ceasing UK production of the sickly sweet liquid without which tablet would not be tablet.

And to add insult to cultural injury, condensed milk is being sacrificed in the name of fashion.

Instead of making condensed milk, the plant has switched to producing a range of instant cappuccino ...
