ON AN autumn day in 1743 a 14-year-old hunchbacked Jewish boy entered Berlin via the Rosenthaler Tor, the only gate through which Jews were allowed to pass. The gatekeeper's log records: "Today there passed six oxen, seven swine, and a Jew." The Jew was Moses Mendelssohn, who 20 years later was a European celebrity, widely known as the 'German Socrates'.
