DRAWING is the ultimate artistic paradox. Apparently the simplest of art forms, it is in fact infinitely complex. From the moment a child picks up pencil or chalk, the marks it makes on paper are direct, spontaneous, immediate. In theory, drawing is art at its most pure. On the evidence of the Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition, however, drawing is currently suffering from an identity crisis and desperately needs help.

In his foreword to the exhibition catalogue, the chairman of the Jerwood Foundation tells us "the art of drawing lies at the ...
