Veterans remember El Alamein

VETERANS of El Alamein honoured their fallen comrades yesterday at an emotional ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of a battle that changed the course of history.

About 150 soldiers from both sides of the battle of El Alamein, a bitter 12-day fight in the autumn of 1942, travelled from across the world to Egypt to pay their respects.

From Britain, about 90 veterans who served in General Bernard Montgomery's Eighth Army, almost all in uniform, stood to attention to salute the memory of their friends who died as young men in the fierce desert war.
