DURING the Indian Mutiny, native mercenaries caught and found guilty of sedition were often executed by being blown from cannons. Some 40 guns might be lined up wheel to wheel, while 40 sepoys awaited their fate. The gun was primed with powder but no shot. The prisoners were led to the gun and tied by the wrists to the upper part of the gun's wheels. Their bodies were draped over the barrel, so that the muzzle pressed into the pit of their stomachs.
