The great Scot of the Arctic

ONE rainy autumn night in Cambridge, with a floor-lamp at my elbow
and a mug of coffee in my hand, I sat reading a particularly cogent
description of how Sir John Franklin had earned the right to be
recognised as the discoverer of the Northwest Passage. The author
observed that the last survivors of Franklin's expedition had
completed the passage only during a final doomed march from their ice-
locked ships. He quoted Sir John Richardson: "They forged the last
link with their lives."
Even as I admired that last line for its poetry, I recognised that
