Hilda Thorpe's work has been extraordinarily diverse, as is amply manifested in a 25-year retrospective exhibition on view simultaneously at the Athenaeum and the artist's loft studio in Alexandria.

There are conventional rectangular paintings, relief paintings, wall sculptures, free-standing sculptures and combinations that bring together painting and sculpture so thoroughly they defy categorization.
