IN May 1941, Rudolph Hess bailed out of his Messerschmitt over Scotland, and told his captors he wished to see the Duke of Hamilton. It was to the startled Duke that Hitler's deputy revealed his true identity, telling him he had come to try and strike a peace deal with Britain. Hess spent the rest of his life in captivity, finally committing suicide in Spandau Prison in 1987 at the age of 93.

The affair has provoked endless speculation, fuelled in part by the Soviet conviction that Britain covertly supported Hess. Why else, ...
