IF THERE was any chance of the Pop Idol franchise continuing to grasp the public's imagination for a serious length of time then this gig would be a terrifying glimpse into the future.

With stars chosen on their cuteness quotient singing previously proven hits marketed, managed and promoted by an interwoven cabal of companies, it is a concept that doesn't give originality much chance. Not so much Orwell's sound of a jackboot stamping on the face of humanity forever, more the sound of creativity whimpering as Simon Cowell's pants are pulled over its head.
