Crash Evidence Contradicts Pilots; Flaps Apparently Were Not Set, Experts Say in Delta Hearing

Physical evidence from the crash of Delta Air Lines Flight 1141,
presented in an inquiry here today, sharply contradicts testimony
from the three pilots that they remembered to set the wing flaps
before attempting to take off.
Donald R. Ryder, a Boeing Co. flaps and hydraulics engineer, said
that the location and condition of components recovered from the
wreckage indicates that the Boeing 727's flaps were not set. A
Boeing aircraft performance engineer followed Ryder, testifying that
the jetliner acted the way it would if its flaps had not been set.
