Moscow Affirms Ban on Works of Solzhenitsyn; Writer's Beliefs, Attitude Decried by Gorbachev Ally

The Soviet Union's new policy of glasnost, or openness, does not extend to the works of exiled Russian novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Kremlin's ideological chief made clear today.

Vadim Medvedev, a member of the ruling 12-man Politburo and close ally of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, told a news conference here he was opposed to publication of Solzhenitsyn's works on Soviet history and the prison camp system known as the gulag. His remarks appeared to spell an end to hopes that the writer might soon receive what would amount to a literary rehabilitation in his native land.
