With Vigor, Coleman Sets Sail; Ex-Va. Official Joins Race for Governor

Republican J. Marshall Coleman, saying he is a "stronger, wiser and better" candidate than when he lost the Virginia governor's race in 1981, announced for that office again today by sharply attacking Lt. Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the likely Democratic gubernatorial nominee.

Coleman, 46, a fixture of the state Republican Party for more than 15 years, delivered a strongly conservative message as he formally entered the four-way fight for his party's 1989 nomination for governor.

"Virginia's future hangs in the balance," Coleman said as he decried what he called the "liberal tax-and-spend" ...
