A FIVE-STAR hotel plan has been thrown into doubt after it's backers were refused an alcohol licence due to the city's crackdown on binge drinking in the Old Town.

Hotel du Vin, the sister company of the Malmaison chain, has been told the city won't make an exception to its ban on new drinks licences in the area for the GBP 10 million development.

The 47-bedroom hotel would create 80 jobs on a site between Forrest Road and Bristo Place.
