WHEN Alvin Ailey, Jr died at the age of 58 in December 1989, the acclaimed dancer and choreographer left behind a repertoire of 79 works that sought to enrich the modern dance tradition and celebrate his African-American heritage.

That legacy will be revisited at the Festival Theatre next week with the return of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, a company which grew from a groundbreaking perform-ance in 1958 and which was based in West 61st Street, New York, from 1989-2005.
