Sheila Tate Bows Out of Competition; Press Secretary Job Would Be Too Time-Consuming, Bush Aide Says

Sheila Tate, President-elect George Bush's press secretary who was once thought to have a good chance of becoming the first female presidential press secretary in history, yesterday ruled herself out of the competition.

"I don't want to give up my personal life," Tate said. "That's the honest truth."

Tate said she had "no way of knowing" whether she would have been offered the job by Bush or of judging the accuracy of speculation that she had been dropped from the running. "You can't really read it when you're that close to it," she said.

Tate, 46, served as Nancy Reagan's press secretary ...
