Tight Budget Pinching Space Probe; European Agency Expected to Seek Joint U.S. Mission to Saturn

Government budget officials will be under extra pressure to approve NASA's high-priority Cassini space probe to Saturn and its moon Titan if, as expected, the European Space Agency adopts the project as its next major space science mission this week.

The decision is to be made today or Friday at a meeting in Paris of ESA's Science Program Committee, which is made up of political officials from the European member nations.

The move comes as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is seeking approval for Cassini from the Office of Management and Budget in the 1990 budget, sources ...
