Tiny plastic pellets that spell death to wildlife

WILDLIFE on the Firth of Forth is coming under threat from thousands of plastic pellets washing up on its shores.

The tiny beads, made at nearby Grangemouth oil refinery, are being swallowed by birds on the estuary, mistaking them for small fish or plankton.

Birds such as fulmars and cormorants have been found dead with up to 50 of the coloured beads in their stomachs.

Those breeds, which flourish on the Forth, are particularly vulnerable as they can't regurgitate the pellets. The tiny pellets have been found washed up on beaches all along the Forth estuary and on the banks of the Water of ...
