Don't Take Great Falls Away From the Experts
|
Anyone witnessing a whitewater boater running Great Falls of the
Potomac sees a spectacular and hair-raising feat. Yet it's too
easy-and wrong-to conclude that paddling there is crazy and must be
stopped.
Some National Park Service officials, concerned that novices
might try to copy the experts, are considering restricting access to
Great Falls. Local officials, too, are tired of taking the heat when
someone gets into trouble on the river.
But experts have run the falls frequently and safely for 12
years, and during that time, no novice has ever been crazy enough to
imitate them.
