China's `House Churches' Persevere; Evangelical Protestants Resist Pressure by the Government to Join Official Church

Chinese authorities are trying to control an evangelical Protestant church movement in and around this south China city by threatening to close those "house churches" that fail to register with the government.

But so far the government has met with stubborn resistance from church leaders, who say that registering would mean joining the government-controlled Patriotic Protestant Church.

Lin Xiangao, 65, who heads the strongest of the nonauthorized house churches here, said that officials have approached him four times since early August, urging him to register with the government.
