In a red-walled chamber lit by a skylight and crystal chandeliers, a sheaf of 316 pieces of paper-ragged on the left side from being torn out of an exercise book-will be brought in by a uniformed attendant on Thursday afternoon and placed on an auction block.

The auctioneer's gavel is not expected to drop until the bidding reaches at least 1 million pounds (approximately $1.7 million), which will make the papers in question-the only existing manuscript of Franz Joseph Kafka's "The Trial"-the most valuable modern literary manuscript ever sold at auction.
